Bedroom

The bedroom with its inviting canopy bed from the early 16th century can be found on the upper floor of the Rübenach house. In this room it is easy to see the elegance and high living standard of the late Gothic period. The decorative wall paintings, with their interpretative and exuberant flowers, fruits and creepers, come from the late 15th century. The corner chapel with its outstanding lead-glass windows from the 15th and 16th century is worth special notice. The bedroom was also partly used as a living room; in the late Middle Ages rooms fulfilled numerous functions. That there was already an idea of hygiene can be seen by the corner toilet with what was for the Middle Ages, a technically advanced rain water flue system. Image

Canopy bed

The functional canopy bed from 1520 has a special rarity value; the canopy is decorated with early Renaissance hunting, battle and jousting scenes. It is impressive not only for its costly workmanship but also for its practicality; the bed is raised on steps to fully utilise the rising warmth in the room and the curtains protect against cold draughts which even a heated room had.

The corner toilet

In the late Middle Ages there was already the beginnings of an idea about hygiene. This can be seen in the "corner-water-closet" which was restored in the 19th century; it is one of twenty such interior toilets in Eltz castle. It functions through a form of water flow drainage that was especially effective when it was raining. Long toilet shafts come down from the roof and drain the system.
