The Electors Room

The Electors room in the Rodendorf house is called after the two most influential members of the Eltz family, Johann Jakob zu Eltz, Prince Elector of Trier and Philipp Karl zu Eltz, Prince Elector of Mainz. Their portraits can be found in this room along with others of the numerous Eltz clerics. Another eye-catcher is the Flemish tapestry from 1680. The room itself with its imposing hearth, the Gothic fire-hood and beautiful furniture appears, like most other rooms in the castle, as if still lived in. An interesting feature is the unusual floor-plan which shows how great a role the form of the rock foundation had on the architecture of the castle. Image

The Flemish Tapestry

This Flemish tapestry from around 1680 is from the workshop of the van der Brüggen brothers in Brussels. It was designed by Jakob Jordaens, one of the most important Flemish artists. Its motif - the waiting hunter with his excited dog - symbolises the fruits of autumn, the harvest and the big autumn hunt.
