Castle Kitchen

The late Middle Ages kitchen in the Rodendorf house retains much of the character of 1540. The very large hearth, the well-preserved stone sink and the other pieces of equipment show clearly how the kitchen - the heart of the house - was arranged. The work here was all done by hand, carefully and imaginatively. Food for storing was hung from the iron rings in the ceiling to protect it from rats and mice. There was even a form of early refrigerator, niches with doors set into the thick kitchen walls could, in the summer, keep the temperature as low as 12 degrees Celsius. Castle Kitchen

Hearth

This hearth in the Rodendorf kitchen has been preserved from the late Middle Ages. The adjustable pot-hook served to regulate the distance of the pot from the open fire burning on the hearth, thereby adjusting the heat. To cook several dishes at the same time cast iron pots with three feet were placed directly into the fire. Image

Stone sink

The stone sink in the window niche was used to wash the crockery. Metal equipment was cleaned using fine sand and water. Stone sink
